Glass Art in The Community

2009 Glass Arts Community Learning Project

Urban Garden Project – Mosaic Mural

Northside Association for Community Development

WMGAC was awarded a grant from the State of Michigan Council for Art and Cultural Affairs. This grant supported two major glass art projects: MRC Industries glass programs and an NACD project that involved neighborhood youth in the creation and construction of a glass mosaic mural reflecting youth working the Urban Garden. The Urban Garden is a neighborhood project developed by the NACD to teach food production, distribution and leadership.

In the summer of 2008, local mural artist, Conrad Kaufman, volunteered his time photographing youth working the garden. He then created a design that was transferred to create a twelve-foot by six-foot mosaic mural that hangs in the NACD’s community room. WMGAC instructors and volunteers spent their time in January of 2009 working with the youth in the creation of the mural.

The mural was unveiled and the participating students were honored at a public reception Tuesday, February 17, 2009.
