Our complete state-of-the-art hot shop for glass blowing offers classes for the beginner to the advanced glass artist. Classes are perfect for adults and teens looking for the excitement of learning a new skill or perfecting the craft.  For safety, please wear 100% cotton clothing, long pants and closed-toe shoes.  Located in Southwest Michigan, West Michigan Glass Art Center is the hotspot of fun things to do in Kalamazoo! Classes include all glass, supplies and tools.

West Michigan Glass Art Center is located in the heart of beautiful downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan.  We are walking distance from the Radisson hotel and many shops and restaurants in the downtown Kalamazoo area.  Many of our classes are family oriented, perfect for adults, teens and youth.  Come and see the many fun things to do in Kalamazoo!



An Evening with Hot Glass

1 DAY

Enjoy an exciting special evening out and learn the basics of glassblowing at the furnace. Learn to gather glass, add color frit, use traditional glassblowing tools and to blow out a hot-glass bubble to make a vase or a drinking glass.

Beginning Glassblowing-Condensed

3 DAYS

Learn the basics of hot glass in this closely supervised, team-driven 3-day course. Study the effects of heat, cooling and gravity. Learn the basic techniques to make solid and blown glass. Class will introduce studio safety, hand tools, equipment and hot working. Class covers gathering, shaping, tool and material usage. Each session will build upon beginning techniques of cold working and the generation of a small vessel like a drinking glass and bowl. You will work in clear glass and be introduced to colored frit the last session.

Hand-Blown Glass Ornament Workshop

Just in time for the holidays! Spend time making multiple hot glass ornaments. You will be able to make spotted, spiral twist and cane striped ornaments. Choose your own colors, gather glass onto a blowpipe, roll it into colored frit and blow to create your very own heirlooms and gifts.

Make Your Own Beer Mugs (NEW!)

1 DAY

If you or someone you know loves beer as much as I do, then you’re ready to take your appreciation to the next level by making your own beer mugs! Come learn the basics of cup-making and get creative with hot colors and cool handles. Students can expect to make at least 1 mug in this 3-hour workshop. Mugs will be ready for pick up 7 days after your class. No experience required—great for beginners!

Hot Glass Hollow Pumpkin Workshop

1 Day

Cool air is moving in and the fall harvest is here. Add a hand-blown pumpkin to your home. This fun class is an introduction to glassblowing and sculpting hot glass. You will learn to gather at the furnace, to add color, blow into optic molds and do bit work to make a colorful pumpkin.

Cups and Mugs Workshop

3 WEEKS

Did you have fun making a cup at summer camp or during Evening with Hot Glass? This is the class especially for you. You will review making a hand-blown cup and learn to make and attach handles. You will get lots of practice making multiple cups and mugs over the course of the class.

Venetian Twist Cup and Open Goblet Review Workshop

1 Day

$75 for Members
$120 for Non-members

Join us to practice teamwork while making twist cups and goblets. This open studio will let everyone share their favorite tips and tricks for using the garage, garage tools, making stems and blown feet for goblets. Bring your own color or practice in clear. Bring a bag lunch.

Glassblowing I

8 WEEKS

Designed for the beginning glassblower. This class will offer students instruction in the fundamentals of working and forming molten glass into basic shapes such as cups, bowls and vases. Students will become familiar with traditional glassblowing equipment and movement in the hot shop. You will be working with clear glass, color frit and solid color. The fall seasonal project will be a pumpkin.

Glassblowing III: Continuing Glassblowing

8 WEEKS

Continue to practice and refine your glassblowing skills. Students will learn how to make two different styles of handles for mugs and pitchers. Footed vessels and bowls with lip wraps will be explored.

Hand-Blown Glass Bowls and Plates

3 WEEKS

$200 for Members
$250 for Non-members

Use your glassblowing skills to make a bowl then attach a spiral wrap of color and spin it out to make a plate. Practice creating a feathering design. You will also learn to attach a foot to your bubble to make a plate.

Venetian Twist Cup and Beginning Goblet Workshop

8 WEEKS

In this advanced-level workshop, students will learn to work in teams, use optic molds, work thinner and faster, and practice traditional old Venetian glassblowing techniques to make beautiful twist cups and goblets.

One-Day Glassblowing Workshop

1 DAY

$165 for Members

Learn the basics of glassblowing at the furnace using traditional tools and blowpipe. Techniques covered will be how to gather glass, use the marver, blocks and jacks to make and blow a bubble form. Then make a cup in the morning and a vase or bowl in the afternoon. Instructor will demonstrate hand blown shapes and students will work on their own projects. You will choose color frit to decorate your glass. There will be 1/2 hour break for lunch.

Cameo Design Sandblasted on Hand-Blown Glass (NEW!)

3 WEEKS

$260 for Members

On the first day, you’ll be introduced to traditional glass blowing as you create glass canvas shapes in the hot shop. The next two classes, you’ll draw, cut out your designs and deep-carve sandblast them. You’ll have hands-on practice creating the cameo designs on your blown objects and additional objects created by the instructor for you.
